On March 17, 2025, the Department of Veterans Affairs announced it would phase out cross-sex hormone therapy and provide no other medical treatment for gender dysphoria, citing the January 2025 executive order recognizing only binary biological sex. Only veterans already receiving hormone therapy through VA, or who began it in military service, retain access; all other transgender veterans must seek and pay for care outside VA. VA serves an estimated transgender population of more than 130,000 veterans.
