SSA announced plans in February 2025 to shed about 7,000 positions, cutting staff from roughly 57,000 toward a target of 50,000, and to collapse its ten regional offices into four. By April 2026 the agency had lost more than 8,000 workers, its largest one-year staffing decline on record, with customer service roles hit hardest. Analysts documented longer phone waits, appointment backlogs for survivors and disability claimants, and record processing delays, and SSA stopped publishing detailed service metrics in mid 2025.
