Impact 6/10

Beginning in February 2025, NIH terminated more than 1,000 active research grants on topics including gender identity, diversity, vaccine hesitancy, and health disparities, following January 2025 executive orders. In June 2025 a federal judge ruled the terminations arbitrary, unlawful, and discriminatory and ordered grants reinstated, but on August 21, 2025 the Supreme Court stayed the reinstatement of payments, holding that money claims must be brought in the Court of Federal Claims while leaving the vacatur of NIH's internal guidance in place. Many canceled studies, including long-running clinical and public health projects, were not restored.
