Impact 6/10

A June 7, 2025 presidential memorandum invoked 10 U.S.C. 12406 to call at least 2,000 California National Guard members into federal service over the governor's objection, the first such federalization since 1965, to protect ICE personnel and facilities during protests against immigration raids in Los Angeles. The deployment grew to roughly 4,000 Guard members plus about 700 active-duty Marines. On September 2, 2025 a federal judge ruled the deployment violated the Posse Comitatus Act by using troops for civilian law enforcement; that ruling remains on appeal.
