House committee votes to cut Legal Services Corporation funding by more than half

Pending8/10
Federal · FY2027 Commerce-Justice-Science appropriations bill (House Appropriations Committee) · Approved by voters May 13, 2026
Impact 8/10

Congress funded LSC at $540 million for fiscal 2026 in a bipartisan package signed in January 2026, a modest cut from prior levels. On May 13, 2026, the House Appropriations Committee approved a fiscal 2027 bill cutting LSC to $268 million, a reduction of $272 million or more than 50 percent. LSC estimates a cut of that size would leave 2.8 million low-income Americans without access to civil legal aid for evictions, domestic violence, veterans benefits, and disaster cases. The cut is not enacted; Senate appropriators have so far supported higher funding.
