Executive Order 14333, signed August 11, 2025, declared a crime emergency in Washington, DC and invoked Section 740 of the Home Rule Act to place the Metropolitan Police Department at the President's disposal under the Attorney General's direction; a companion memorandum mobilized the DC National Guard. More than 2,000 Guard members, including units sent by several states, patrolled the city, and the deployment continued after the 30-day police control period lapsed in September 2025. In November 2025 a federal judge ruled the extended Guard deployment unlawful, but the order was stayed pending appeal.
