Federal · CFPB Medical Debt Rule (Regulation V, Jan 2025); vacated E.D. Tex., July 11, 2025 · Decided Jul 11, 2025
Impact 7/10

The CFPB finalized a rule in January 2025 barring medical debt from consumer credit reports, projected to remove medical bills from the credit reports of roughly 15 million Americans and improve their access to mortgages and loans. Under the Trump administration the CFPB joined industry plaintiffs in asking the court to strike down its own rule, and on July 11, 2025 the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas vacated it as exceeding the Bureau's authority. Medical debt can therefore continue to appear on credit reports.
