CARES Act: $1,200 stimulus, mixed-status families largely excluded

Federal · CARES Act, Pub. L. 116-136 · Mar 27, 2020
Impact 7/10

The CARES Act provided $1,200 per adult and $500 per child to most Americans but denied payments to entire households if any member filed taxes with an ITIN, excluding roughly 12 million people in mixed-status families, including U.S. citizen spouses and children. The December 2020 relief law retroactively allowed payments to spouses and children with Social Security numbers in mixed-status households, but undocumented taxpayers themselves remained excluded from all rounds.
