Schools barred from requiring staff to use students' preferred pronouns

Enacted5/10
North Dakota · North Dakota HB 1522 · Signed May 8, 2023
Impact 5/10

Prohibits public school boards and teachers from adopting any policy that requires or prohibits the use of a transgender student's preferred pronoun, effectively letting school staff decline to use them. A stricter version that would have mandated pronouns matching sex assigned at birth (SB 2231) was vetoed by the governor in March 2023 and the veto override failed in the House.
